Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. She was night nurses to afford her aunt the space she required during the day for the love of literature, art and theatre. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to engage people. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate via art. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the historic civil right's march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as a young student. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. From this position she started her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective. Her name is associated with a well-known actress that has been in American Experience (1987), A More Perfect Union (2009) along with other films. Autumn appeared as Rose from A More Perfect Union as well as Anna Payne from American Experience.
